Internal communication is usually overlooked in companies in the Middle East. Managers tend to assume if employees are still with a company, then they're happy to be there or comfortable with the way things work.
In the digital age, it's really not difficult to communicate with your people. Keeping them up to date with recent events company-wide, the growth of the company on a quarterly basis and, more importantly, what the company's purpose is, goes a long way for employee satisfaction. Knowing where you are standing and feeling empowered with the projects you work on makes employees feel more satisfied and happy. In fact, a recent survey reflected that 73 percent of employees who say they work at a "purpose-driven" company are engaged, compared to just 23 percent of those who don't.
But people don't get engaged from air. Many companies are taking for granted the crucial fact that awareness of what goes on where they work creates a sense of purpose that allows employees to do better work and exceed their own abilities.
Some time ago I worked on an annual report for Linktia. The purpose of this book was precisely to engage its people by creating awareness of things that matter to them. A comprehensive report with updates for each company that made part of the group at the time and comments from key people who also commented on the great job their teams were doing and how this influenced the future of the company. All this gave employees that sense of pride and purpose that's key to their growth and the company's.
The book had quite a success among employees. We initially created a link so people can see it only, but soon enough we had the urge to print a few copies by request of employees who wanted to share this book in their meetings. We understood that this report allowed them to feel proud of where they worked and, therefore, share this experience with clients.Â
Sometimes sharing information within a company doesn't happen naturally, sometimes if upper management doesn't get involved then it creates a wall in how communication is delivered to the rest of the company. At Linktia, my marketing team and I had this initiative that ultimately had a great impact on how people felt about the company and made them feel taken care of and appreciated.
Internal communication is overlooked. However, it's a also everyone's responsibility to ask for it and make managers share key information that will improve people's jobs and get that sense of purpose we all need.
